West Lakes

In the 1970s some 895 hectares of wasteland from the upper reaches of the Port River were transformed into West Lakes, an internationally recognised award-winning residential development. It is a relatively new suburb in Adelaide, located 12 km north west of the City.

West Lakes is situated between the industrial areas around Port Adelaide and the Adelaide Airport. To the west is the coastline of Gulf St Vincent, and to the east it is bounded by four of Adelaide's famous "sand belt" golf courses. Many homes feature water frontages, and the local population currently exceeds 14,400 residents. The man-made saltwater lake has been constructed so that it is replenished daily by natural tidal flows.

Other local features include:

  • AAMI Stadium, the home ground for the Crows and Power, Adelaide's two AFL teams;
  • an olympic sized rowing/canoeing course;
  • a Westfield shopping centre comprising more than 200 retail outlets and 6 cinemas;
  • a 4.5 star hotel comprising 72 guest rooms/suites with all the trimmings and facilities;
  • several restaurants, cafes, and takeaway food outlets;
  • many community facilities, a large public library, numerous sporting clubs, schools, walking trails, and 6 km of wide sandy beach.
  • The real estate developer's marketing slogan is most apt ... "Enjoy a year-round holiday at home, here at West Lakes".

    West Lakes Weather

    Historical weather data for the immediate area was virtually non-existent. Official Bureau of Meteorology weather data is recorded at the Adelaide Regional Office (Kent Town, 13.5 km east) and at Adelaide Airport (9 km south). Automatic rainfall gauges are located at Port Adelaide (3 km north), and at Seaton (Royal Adelaide Golf Club, 2.5 km south).

    In my youth I was a blue-water yachtsman, and for many years since I have maintained a "weather eye". In 2002, when looking at the Bureau's Adelaide Metropolitan Area Rainfall Summary on the internet, I was surprised to learn the yearly average at Seaton was 24% less than at Kent Town, so I decided to start recording my own local rainfall data.

    To satisfy my growing interest I recently installed an Oregon Scientific WMR928NX Automatic Weather Station, powered by Andy Kier's FreeWX-Wi weather station software. The Weather Underground is a world-wide network of 12,100 weather watchers who regularly exchange weather data, photos, etc., via a website based in California. Approximately 130 of these weather stations are in Australia, with about 15 in the Adelaide region.

    Regardless of whether you are "just browsing", planning a picnic or water sports on the lake, or attending a football match at AAMI Stadium, I invite you to follow the hot links to view current and recent historical weather data, as well as other information about West Lakes.
